Surgical procedures are medical interventions that often cause anxiety in patients. High levels of anxiety can negatively affect patients’ physiological conditions, the surgical process, and postoperative recovery. Relaxation techniques are one of the non-pharmacological interventions that can be used to reduce patients’ anxiety levels. This study aimed to determine the effect of relaxation techniques on reducing anxiety levels in patients undergoing surgical procedures.
This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The research sample consisted of 40 preoperative patients undergoing elective surgery at Hospital X. The relaxation technique administered was deep breathing relaxation for 10–15 minutes. Anxiety levels were measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using a paired t-test. The results showed that the mean anxiety score before the relaxation technique was 25.8 (moderate–severe anxiety category), while after the intervention it decreased to 17.2 (mild–moderate anxiety category). The paired t-test results showed a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect of relaxation techniques on reducing anxiety levels in preoperative patients. In conclusion, relaxation techniques have a significant effect on reducing anxiety levels in patients undergoing surgery. This technique can be used as an independent nursing intervention in preoperative patient care.
